This is probably why he was able to improvise the Plasma Cutter as a weapon so quickly as soldiers are often taught to look at any item as a potential weapon. As such, he has had basic combat training. Though Isaac is mostly known as an engineer, let’s not forget that he is a member of a military organization. That’s just kind of the nature of making an improvised ranged weapon. After all, messing with a tool’s mechanics isn’t wise and again, this was never intended to be a weapon. I’d also wager that the weapon is somewhat unreliable in its ranged mode. If I had to guess, it weighs about as much as cordless drill which will make it somewhat hard to wield in certain scenarios. Given that this was intended to be a power tool as opposed to a weapon, it is not properly weighted for combat.
The cutting edge can even be switched to a horizontal or vertical orientation, allowing for a variety of cutting options. This allows the cutter to shoot a blast of plasma that can cut through anything in its path. This might lead you to believe that the Plasma Cutter is strictly a close range weapon but with a quick modification, the cutter can be turned into a powerful sidearm. It can make mincemeat out of flesh and stone and given enough time, it will get through metal as well. In its standard mode, it produces a blade of plasma that can cut through just about anything. The Plasma Cutter can be used in one of two ways. Most famously Isaac Clark who we will be looking at for this examination. Though not technically a weapon, the Plasma Cutter has been improvised as such by several characters in the series. As such, it is very common in the world of Dead Space. In a similar fashion to the real world plasma cutter, the one we see in Dead Space is intended as a high power cutting tool. The Plasma Cutter is a futuristic power tool that exists within the future depicted in the Dead Space series.
